5 Ways Multi-Split Air Conditioning Can Benefit Small Businesses

Tyler Vogelsberg • Dec 02, 2020

Air conditioning systems are vital equipment for most commercial buildings, and providing a cool, comfortable working environment for your employees can significantly improve productivity and workplace morale. This makes air conditioning especially useful to small businesses, which tend to rely on small, highly skilled workforces to remain profitable.

If you need a new air conditioning system for your small business, consider choosing a multi-split air conditioner. These versatile systems have a number of advantages over other commercial cooling solutions and are particularly well-suited to the needs of small businesses. Here are five good reasons why small business owners should opt for multi-split air conditioning:

1. Compact and unobtrusive

Most large commercial buildings rely on powerful, ducted air conditioning systems. These systems generate cool air using a central condenser unit and distribute the air to where it is needed using a series of ducts. Unfortunately, ductwork can take up a lot of space, which can be problematic if your business operates from a small building with low ceilings.

Multi-split air conditioners function quite differently and do not require any ducting to function. Instead, they rely on refrigerant liquids, which are cooled inside an outdoor condenser. The refrigerant liquid is then channelled to indoor units via refrigerant lines. The indoor units contain fans, which force air across the surface of the chilled refrigerant lines to cool the surrounding area.

Refrigerant lines are much smaller than full-sized AC ducts and are usually hidden inside wall or ceiling cavities to minimise visibility. The indoor units used by multi-split systems are also very compact and can be mounted on walls or within dropped ceilings. Multi-split air conditioners consequently take up a lot less space than most AC systems.

2. Minimal building modification required

Installing ductwork for a ducted system usually requires extensive building modifications to make room for the bulky ducts. This can be very expensive, and your building may be partially or completely unusable while the ducts are being installed.

Multi-split systems are much easier and faster to install, and their refrigerant lines can usually be routed through walls and ceilings without extensive building modifications. This makes multi split installation relatively inexpensive, and rapid installation will help to minimise periods of expensive downtime.

3. Cool multiple rooms with one system

Many split AC systems used in residential and commercial properties are referred to as single split systems. These systems use outdoor condenser units to provide chilled refrigerant for a single indoor unit and are very inexpensive. However, if your business premises contains multiple rooms, you will need to install multiple indoor units, which each require their own dedicated condenser.

Installing multiple single split systems can be prohibitively expensive, and can increase your building's overall energy usage dramatically. Multi-split systems use a single condenser unit that can channel refrigerants to multiple indoor units simultaneously. They are cheaper and faster to install than multiple single split systems, and will also use significantly less energy.

4. Zonal control

Modern multi-split systems have zonal control capabilities, which allow you to set each individual indoor unit to a different temperature using a centralised control panel. If the rooms in your building aren't all being used simultaneously, multi-split systems let you redirect cooling power away from unused rooms, which can lead to dramatic energy savings.

5. Quiet operation

Controlling unwanted noise can be very difficult in smaller commercial buildings, and you may not have enough space to install acoustical panels and other sound-attenuating structures. Excessive noise can make it difficult for your employees to concentrate, and may cancel out the productivity benefits provided by your air conditioning system.

Multi-split air conditioners do not generate a lot of noise while functioning, and their indoor units are insulated to muffle noise produced by their internal fans. Adding a multi-split air conditioner to your premises will have a negligible effect on ambient noise levels.
